Caring for your new puppy

WHAT KIND OF FOOD, HOW OFTEN, AND HOW MUCH?

We recommend Royal Canin Puppy Food. We have them on full feed (meaning we keep a little in their pan all the time) while they are here to give them the best possible start. When you welcome them into your home, you can continue full feed, or put them on your vet's recommended feeding routine to fit your lifestyle and schedule.

CRATING AND SLEEP

Kinda like bringing home a new baby! Everything's new and different and the puppy will probably cry in the crate—especially those first few nights. Crating your pup at night and while you are gone though is really a very good habit. The puppy learns learns quickly that they are safe in there and it will keep them out of trouble while you are gone or sleeping. 😌

We urge you to stick with the crate – even if the first few days are difficult. It’s also true that most puppies will not go to the bathroom in their crate. Of course there can be accidents. Don't leave food or water in the crate unless they are going to be in there for a few hours, then just leave the minimum amount you think they will need—that way they won't have to go potty before you get back!

HOUSE-BREAKING

Taking your pup out frequently, and using consistent terminology to encourage your pup to go is helpful. Give lots of praise when the pup does pee or poop outside. Don’t scold your pup if you find pee or poop inside unless you catch them in the act. Typically scolding when you find an old accident is meaningless to them as they don’t associate the scolding with the act of having gone to the bathroom unless it's real-time. We like to hang a bell on the doorknob and ring it with their paw each time we take them out—and before you know it, they are ringing it on their own!

DO THEY LIKE TO SWIM?

Yes! Or at least most of them do! Some will jump into the pool after the kids! So much fun!!!

ARE THEY GOOD WITH KIDS?

Babysitters with fur are the best! Bernedoodles make excellent companions to children. They quickly learn to be gentle with the littles and really become the best of friends. Although we can't promise they won't get into a little mischief together, we can promise they'll fast become best friends and happily clean-up any spilled food ;]

FAQs

What is the weight of a full-grown Bernedoodle?

  • MIni: 30-50 lbs

  • Standard: 50-80 lbs

Will my puppy have a microchip?

We do not microchip our puppies. Microchipping is a very easy, affordable process that your veterinarian can easily do.

What are the generations of Bernedoodles?

  • The F1 Mini Bernedoodles is a result of a pure-bred Bernese Mountain Dog crossed with a pure-bred Poodle. F1 is first-generation cross, in which the pup is 50% Bernese Mountain Dog and 50% Poodle. The F1 cross is considered the healthiest, as the parents have the least likelihood of contributing genes for common inheritable diseases. Low maintenance coat with wave and considered minimal to no shed.

  • F1b is a Bernedoodle bred with a Poodle. F1b Mini Bernedoodles will have a higher success rate for no shed, and are recommended for families with moderate to severe allergies. The puppy is 25% Bernese, and 75%Poodle. F1b puppies are the most likely to be non-shedding and allergy-friendly.

What is the difference between male and female Bernedoodles?

Males tend to be larger than females, but beyond that, there is not a major difference between the genders. The differences are quite subtle, and both males and females make amazing pets. We think temperament is more important than gender when matching dogs to owners.

What are the grooming requirements for a Bernedoodle?

  •  A Bernedoodle’s shedding is minimal or non-existent. However, it does need to be brushed regularly to prevent matting, and clipped every 8-12 weeks or so, depending on your preferences and the dog’s activities. If your Bernedoodle is very active outdoors, you will likely find a shorter clip easier to maintain. But many owners enjoy the look of them in a fuller coat. A curly coat is less likely to shed but more likely to become matted if not brushed regularly. Daily brushing will be required, as well as professional grooming every 8-12 weeks.

  • Make sure to be very specific with the groomer as to how you want your dog groomed; “NO POODLES CUTS ALLOWED!” :]  Most groomers will not have cut a Bernedoodle and will default to a standard Poodle clip. So be specific and show the groomer photos of how you want your dog to look.

  • Also: avoid bathing your Bernedoodle too often, as it strips essential oils from the coat.

Are they hypoallergenic?

There is no such thing as a fully-hypoallergenic dog; Bernedoodles tend to be allergy-friendly. Most people with allergies to dog dander (i.e., those who experience sneezing, watery eyes) are fine with a Bernedoodle.

Every Bernedoodle has a different coat. The curlier the coat the less it will shed. Most Bernedoodles have the wavy type coat that is low- to non-shedding. If you are allergic to dog saliva you will most likely be allergic to Bernedoodles. You will know if you are allergic to saliva if your skin will break out in hives when a dog licks you. We always suggest that if allergies are involved, customers should meet some Bernedoodles if they can. Also, we will allow a couple of weeks to see if you are allergic to your puppy and will help re-home it if there’s a problem. This has happened very rarely.

Do you have a contract?

Yes, you can find a copy of our Health Guarantee here.

How are your Bernedoodles raised?

We live on 20 acres that is fenced in to give our doggos plenty of room for exercise and roaming. We keep them supplied with bones from the local butcher to keep them occupied for hours! We do have a kennel area, heated and cooled, where they spend the nights and for times we leave for a few hours. Our puppies are raised in our nursery area and brought into the house or to the front yard daily [weather permitting] for playtime and socialized by any of our 6 grandchildren.

What will puppy come home with?

They will be up to date on shots and deworming, they will have a shot record, a vet certificate, a signed health contract, and a small food kit.

What coat type will my puppy have?

Our puppies will range in coat types from curly to wavy.
